Senior Steve Hayes won the mile run and freshman Tim Kaijala took the 1,000-meter crown, as Penn placed second at the Sorlein Memorial Invitational Friday at Rhode Island.
Freshman Kyle Calvo won the long jump with his effort of 23 feet and six inches, as teammates Pete Habegger and Pete Cochran placed second and fourth, respectively.
The Quakers won both the 4x400-meter and the 4x800mrelays in the eight-team event, but it was not enough to unseat host Rhode Island, which finished with 158 points to Penn's 134.
Beyond Kaijala's performance, the 1,000 was a strong race for the Quakers, as Dan Howard and John Guzman had top-five finishes.
The Quakers also had success in the 500, taking three of the four top spots. Courtney Jaworski finished second, with Eric Ljungquist and Carson Schmiett following right behind him.
Penn returns to the track for the Terrier Classic Jan. 28.
