Campus set for 'Some Fling for Everyone' theme

Band choices remain unknown; students mixed over theme

Finally, the T-shirts and souvenirs can start being printed -- the Social Planning and Events Committee has decided on the theme for the upcoming 2004 Spring Fling.

SPEC announced last night that the theme for the April 16-17 weekend will be "Some Fling for Everyone."

The phrase follows such Fling themes of the past as "Testing, Testing, Is This Fling On?" and "Fling Me Baby One More Time."

Spring Fling Committee Co-Director and College junior Rachel Myers said the theme "highlights the fact that Fling really is a chance to allow everyone at Penn to find something to enjoy."

Her co-director, Wharton senior Jahred Kallop, agreed that the theme reflects the wide range of events that Fling has to offer.

Kallop said he thinks this theme shows that Fling "is more than just ... drinking for everyone," adding that it encompasses "a lot of activities for a much broader audience."

Although Myers admitted many "Lord of the Rings-oriented" themes were considered, she said the committee focused on emphasizing that Fling "really is a Penn event and a Penn tradition."

Wharton sophomore Jonathan Eu said that the theme helps to get students in the Fling spirit.

"Every year it's kind of been a catchy slogan to get people's attention," he said. "I think it works."

College junior Richard Eisenberg said he was a bit less passionate about the theme this year.

"I'm kind of more neutral on this one than I have been on the past ones," he said, adding, "usually I think they're either really cool or really stupid."

However, he plans to go into the weekend event with an open mind.

"It might not necessarily be as creative as some of the last titles, but I am going to reserve judgment until I see what the show looks like," he said.

According to Myers, each aspect of the show -- including the carnival and the concerts -- will be very similar to last year's Fling, except for some minor changes.

"We're hoping to incorporate the theme into a lot of activities," said Myers, who noted that "in the past, the theme hasn't really been tied to the carnival event."

She said she would like to see "more continuity throughout the weekend."
