Staff Editorial: Help for Bennett finally in sight?

It seems like ages ago that the University first announced plans to renovate Bennett Hall. The building, which hasn't been significantly upgraded since the mid-'60s, has long been one of the most dilapidated on campus despite being one of the School of Arts and Sciences' centerpiece facilities.

Now, after several delays and a struggle to finance the project, the Board of Trustees has approved the money needed to renovate the English Department's home. It will cost over $16 million, and without a major donor, much of the bill will be footed internally through a loan and SAS bank funds.

This building has tremendous historical significance on campus, having served as the home of the College for Women in the first half of the 20th century. With the proper upgrade, it will retain its value to the University and remain an important campus landmark.

While it has taken far too long to begin this project, we applaud SAS and the trustees for finally giving Bennett Hall's much-needed renovations the seal of approval.

But we caution those involved that these renovations must begin sooner rather than later. Upgrades were first proposed three years ago, and little progress has been made in the interim. In addition, other departments like Music are waiting patiently in line for renovations to begin on their respective buildings as well.

The funding has been approved. Now, the University must set an expedient timetable for construction on Bennett Hall. Hopefully, current freshmen will be able to study in a remodeled Bennett Hall before they graduate.
