Team of the year: Men's Soccer
The Ivy League title returned to Rhodes Field for the first time in 22 years, as the Penn men's soccer team finished an impressive championship season with a mark of 12-4-1 and 5-1-1 in Ivy play. With the emergence of strong freshman play and leadership from the goal in Ivy League Player of the Year Matt Haefner, Penn made its way to the second round of the NCAA College Cup with a 1-0 overtime win against Seton Hall in the first round. Male athlete of the year: Ugonna Onyekwe
Ugonna Onyekwe will graduate from Penn with three Ivy League championships, two Ivy League Player of the Year awards and 1,762 points -- the second most in the program's prestigious history. Onyekwe played his best game of the season when Penn needed him most, matching a career-high 30 points in the Quakers' 77-63 first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Oklahoma State. Female athlete of the year
Coming in as a returning All-American, she was marked from the start. Runa Reta responded, winning her way to the Intercollegiates finals, where she took second nationally for the second consecutive year. Fierce on the court, Reta was also honored with the Betty Richey Award for her devotion to the sport and exemplifying the ideals of squash. Reta led the Quakers to fourth at the Howe Cup and a No. 4 national ranking. Honorable Mention: Katy Cross, Alice Pirsu
Coach of the year
This was not supposed to be Penn's year. Al Bagnoli needed to replace the team's all-time leading rusher and passer along with 14 other starters. However, his Quakers never missed a beat. Penn stormed through the Ivy League, winning by no fewer than 21 points all year. The Quakers played their best in their most important game of the year, knocking off defending Ivy League champion Harvard, 44-9. Honorable Mention: Rudy Fuller, Kerry Major Carr, Fran Dunphy
