Princeton fires football coach Steve Tosches

University spokesperson Jerry Price said late yesterday afternoon that Tosches resigned, but sources close to the league and the school insisted he was fired. Neither Tosches nor Athletic Director Gary Walters returned telephone calls left by the AP seeking comment. Price said Tosches will not be available for comment until after the Thanksgiving holiday at the earliest. While Princeton won three titles under Tosches, it has had only one winning season since 1995, when it captured its first outright title since 1964. The Tigers posted a 3-7 record this season, including a 1-6 mark in the league. The year was capped by a 19-18 loss to Dartmouth, a game in which Princeton blew an 18-0 fourth-quarter lead. Tosches posted a 78-50-2 record but his teams were 17-23 over the past four seasons compared to 61-27-2 in the first nine. The Tigers were 6-16 in games decided by a touchdown over the past four years. -- The Associated Press
