The Daily Pennsylvanian

Mayoral Race 1999: John Street

Like the people of the University of Pennsylvania, I understand the need for collaboration. It will be key to the city's future success. The partnership between the University and the West Philadelphia neighborhood serves as a model. Penn has been a significant partner with the city on many projects -- such as the new school in University City, which will make a tremendous contribution to the children of Philadelphia. The city and the University collaborated in developing the Inn at Penn -- creating not just an exciting campus resource but also jobs for neighborhood residents. As mayor, I plan to build on these initiatives, work to retain Penn grads and capitalize on University research and development to build new businesses that will benefit and strengthen the city and entire region. Philadelphia is not a balance sheet. Success must be measured not only in the fiscal health of the city, but also in the quality of life issues that make it livable: the quality of public education, the safety and appeal of neighborhoods, and the ability of residents to work and raise their families. As mayor, I will use my experience to implement my vision to make Philadelphia the city of choice and opportunity.
