Woman assaulted by Wawa employee A University Police officer standing outside the store was the first to respond, after he learned two people were fighting inside. Upon entering the store at around 12:20 a.m., the officer found the man and the woman wrestling on the floor. The woman -- who police said has been forcibly committed to a mental institution in the past as a manic depressant -- allegedly bit the employee while paying at the counter. The employee engaged in a struggle with the woman and then hit her in the head with a three foot long, two-by-four piece of wood. The woman suffered a gash in the head, which was treated by medical personnel at the scene. She refused further medical treatment. She also declined to press any charges against the employee. The store was temporarily closed following the altercation. -- Rod Kurtz
