Synchronized swimming exhibition scheduled for Sunday at Sheerr Pool Come Sunday afternoon, guys will also be getting wet and wild in the University's Sheerr Pool as they join the six members of the all-female Penn Synchronized Swimming Club for its 52nd annual exhibition. The free event begins at 1 p.m. at Sheerr, which is located inside Gimbel Gymnasium. According to Penn co-captain Eileen McCarthy, the exhibition will feature a variety of aquatic ballet routines set to music, including a coed act with amateur male synchronized swimmers. The Penn Singers will also provide music for one of the routines. "This is the hardest thing," said McCarthy about her sport, which is oft-perceived as being un-masculine. "You have to do flips and splits and keep yourself smiling all while holding your breath." One of the oldest female club sports at Penn, the synchronized swimming team is unparalleled in the Ivy League. No other school in the Ancient Eight has one. Still, the team -- which features two academic All-Americans in McCarthy and Nono Peralta -- recently placed 15th and 16th in the trio and duet events respectively at the Collegiate Nationals in San Diego. -- Eric Dash
