Theta punished for rush infraction

The sorority received one month's social probation, but it was unclear what exactly the infraction was for. After multiple chapters filed a rush infraction against the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority last week, the sorority has been placed on social probation for one month and must complete educational programming because members "violated rush ethics," according to Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Director Scott Reikofski. The sanctions were handed down this weekend by OFSA and the Panhellenic Council to "help the chapter determine where they were having communication problems getting the rules across," according to outgoing Panhel President Janelle Brodsky, a College and Engineering senior. "The whole [rush] process is designed to create an even playing field for the chapters," Reikofski said. "Some of the [Theta] sisters were communicating in a way that wasn't in accordance with Panhel rules." Social probation prohibits the sorority from holding social events but allows community service and sisterhood activities. Several Theta sisters refused to comment on the details of the rush infraction. The Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi and Delta Delta Delta sororities jointly filed the rush infraction through Panhel and OFSA, but none of those sororities' presidents would describe the specifics of the infraction. "Rush ethics are set in place for the benefit of rushees and sororities alike," said Tri-Delt President Abby Nims, a Nursing senior. "When those are violated, it may ruin the spirit of rush." Alpha Chi Omega President Hazel Imbesi, a Nursing senior, and Alpha Phi President Denise Tiedeman, also a Nursing senior, refused to comment. Theta President Sophie Bosch, a College senior, said she thought more infractions could have been filed against other sororities this year for various reasons, but added that she did not file any because "[Theta] find[s] it very catty." "I think the whole system creates a lot of animosity amongst the houses," added Bosch. She added, though, that the month of social probation will be "good for the chapter and foster sisterhood." Brodsky said Theta's sanction is a "big deal," but added that it will help both the chapter and Panhel to determine how to better communicate Panhel rules. "[The infraction] sends a very clear message that you have to follow the rules," Brodsky said. In her experience at the University, Brodsky said rush infractions "don't happen often." Reikofski added that infractions of this nature occur once "about every couple of years."
