LETTERS: Cops responded adequately

To the Editor: First, Waithe says that those officers "got what they deserved" because he doesn't like the way University Police treat him. How would Waithe like it if I said black people should be beaten because I know people who have been mugged by blacks. Sounds pretty stupid, doesn't it? Well take a look in the mirror. Waithe also criticizes the fact that it took 60 officers to apprehend the 3 suspects. Well Waithe, get out your notebook because I'm gonna take you to school. When the expert who wrote the DP article says that there were 60 officers there, it doesn't mean they all were there for the arrests. It means 60 officers responded to the call on the radio, but they were not necessarily all there at the same time. When an officer is assaulted and an attempt to steal his gun is made, officers must assume that the suspect is dangerous and possibly carrying a weapon. By having overwhelming numbers, the officers have less of a chance of being harmed and a suspect may be intimidated into surrendering peacefully. That's why when two guys rob a bank, 300 offiers show up. Lou Camaratta Engineering '99 Congrats to the DP To the Editor: As a retired advertising creative director and writer, I want to attest to the merit of The Daily Pennsylvanian's Pacemaker Award. While auditing courses at Penn as a senior associate for the past few years, I have developed a strong respect for the consistently professional quality of the DP in content, format, design and, not least, editorial integrity. This would be quite a trick were it your full-time job. What amazes and delights me is that you pull this off on a daily basis as a secondary pursuit to the demands of your primary goal of an academic degree. Incredible! Bravo and congratulations to the entire staff on your award. You have truly earned it. Charles DeMirjian College of General Studies
