Panhel members elect junior council Fifteen women -- one from Delta Delta Delta and two from each of the other seven sororities -- were chosen to represent their chapters by their respective pledge classes, according to Panhel President Jessica Lennon. New members elected seven of those women Tuesday to serve on the junior Panhel executive board. College sophomore Romy Mehlman of Kappa Alpha Theta and Wharton freshman Lauren Wagner of Sigma Delta Tau will serve as co-presidents of junior Panhel. Mehlman and Wagner's executive cabinet will consist of Executive Vice President Stefanie Siegel and Vice President for Rush Deborah Bauml of Alpha Chi Omega, Vice President for Publicity Sarah Youdovin of Chi Omega, Secretary Amy Cayne of Theta, and Treasurer Mindy Glazier of Alpha Phi -- all of whom are College freshmen -- according to Panhel Executive Vice President Bethany Rubin, a College junior in Pi Beta Phi. The women elected to the panel, which "mirrors" the Panhel executive board, are responsible for planning one large event. The other selected women will represent their houses on various committees which "model the Panhel committees," Youdovin said. Panhel Vice President for Publicity Beth Linn, a College sophomore and Tri Delt sister, said "the members of junior Panhel serve as liaisons between Panhel and the new members." Lennon, a College junior also in Tri Delt, described junior Panhel as "a program of budding leaders." The newly elected board members said they are excited to work on inter-chapter projects. -- Randi Rothberg Police arrest theft suspect after assault A suspect in several recent thefts from the McNeil Building at 37th Street and Locust Walk punched a University employee in the face after being confronted by the employee yesterday morning, police said. University Police Detective John Peterson explained that a staff member of Career Planning and Placement's On-Campus Recruiting Service noticed a suspicious-looking man in the center's waiting room at approximately 11:25 a.m. When the employee approached the man and spoke to him, the suspect punched him in the face and fled the scene. The staff member was treated and released from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for minor injuries. Police described the suspect as an 18- to 20-year-old, 5'9" black male weighing approximately 170 pounds. The man is suspected of stealing several credit cards from a student's backpack at approximately the same time Wednesday morning in the same area of the building, Peterson said. -- Scott Lanman Forum to examine responses to crime The voices of violent crime victims will be heard this Monday. Nearly 15 campus and community organizations have joined the Division of Public Safety in sponsoring an event entitled "From Fear to Hope: A Nonviolent Response to Violence" Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Newman Center. Scheduled speakers include attorney Richard Rosin, father of Rebecca Rosin -- who had dated Al-Moez Alimohamed, the fifth-year Mathematics graduate student who was murdered near campus in August 1994. Rebecca Rosin committed suicide in December 1995. John and Kathy Polec -- the parents of 16-year-old Eddie Polec, who was beaten to death in Northeast Philadelphia in November 1994 -- and Corine Toms, who founded a support group for parents of murdered children after her son was killed in West Philadelphia, will also speak at the event. -- Scott Lanman
