The new Greenfield Intercultural Center director will mark yet another transition in the University administration this summer. Vice Provost for University Life Larry Moneta said Tuesday that "an offer has been made" to one of two finalists selected by a search committee, but he would not reveal the identity of that person. "We are in the midst of negotiating," he said. "I am legally prohibited from giving?names until that is completed." He added that the negotiations include "standard salary and related issues." Moneta said he hopes to announce the name of the new GIC director this week. "I would like to get this resolved by the end of the week," he said. "I'm confident that I will reach a plausible agreement with the person but the person wants a little time to think about it." Meanwhile, rumors have been flying about the names of the top candidates being considered for the position. The most likely candidate is Joseph Sun, who is currently serving a one-year term as GIC's interim director. Sun left his post as assistant dean for advising in the College of Arts and Sciences to take the interim position. Both Moneta and Sun said that Sun has been a candidate throughout the search process, but neither would confirm or deny that he is the one who has been selected. However, it is widely believed that he is one of the two finalists. Sun said Tuesday that he has not yet received an offer "officially," but that he is "still a candidate" and therefore could not comment further. He did say, however, that he would not mind giving up his position in the College to remain as the GIC's permanent director. "That's why I made myself available to be considered as a candidate," he said. The GIC, located at 3708 Chestnut Street, houses more than 10 minority groups on campus, including the United Minorities Council and all of its constituents. The GIC also began a new program this year, called PACE, or Programs for Awareness in Cultural Education. Members of PACE go through training and then hold informative cultural discussion sessions and role-playing workshops for University groups. Moneta said he is pleased with Sun's performance as interim director. "I think he's been great," Moneta said. "I've been delighted with the work he's done, the students have been thrilled [and] he's brought visibility to the GIC." The permanent GIC director is scheduled to begin work July 1, the same day President-elect Judith Rodin and Provost-elect Stanley Chodorow will take office.
