Mudhoney to perform at Fling

The Spring Fling concert ticket is two-thirds complete. Opening for the main attraction, Cypress Hill, will be the "grunge" alternative rock band Mudhoney, SPEC Spring Fling Committee co-Chairperson Kofi McCleary announced last night. But Chairperson of the SPEC Concerts Committee Haile Johnston added that a second opening act will definitely be added in the near future. McCleary described the Seattle-based Mudhoney as "up and coming," adding that their biggest success came when their single hit, "Overblown," appeared on the Singles movie soundtrack. The band is also currently opening for Pearl Jam across the country, he said. "I've heard a lot of positive comments that they are good in concert and produce a really good show," McCleary said last night. McCleary said the search process for the opening act was rather simple. "It's really just who's available at what time," he said. "We got lucky that they are going to be in the area and that they are available on the night of Fling." Johnston said the Cypress Hill-Mudhoney combination will work because it is diverse enough to attract many types of music lovers. "With the addition of Mudhoney, I think the package appeals to a wider audience," the Wharton junior said. "It's a more diverse package. [For] some people who might not have been as into Cypress Hill, Mudhoney is a definite attraction." Overall, McCleary said, the Fling concert will be "well worth" its $12.50 ticket price. As for the final third of the concert, Johnston said the committees are still looking. "We're going to have somebody," he said. "We haven't found anybody yet who is available and completes the package as we would like to." McCleary said ticket sales for the concert, which began last Friday, are "better than any Fling concert" in recent memory. He added that the floor tickets, which are general admission, are more than half-way gone. Floor tickets and assigned seating tickets will continue to be sold through tomorrow on Locust Walk. After that, they will be available in the Annenberg Center Box Office until the concert. Spring Fling, which is sponsored by the SPEC, will take place April 15 and 16, with the concert featured on the second night.
