Jamieson to anchor Town Hall

Annenberg School for Communication Dean Kathleen Hall Jamieson will moderate the third University-wide Town Meeting, focusing on undergraduate education, Friday morning. The 90-minute Town Meeting, which is co-sponsored by the Student Committee on Undergraduate Education and the President's Office, will be filmed in the Law School's new Nicole E. Tannenbaum Hall beginning at 9:00 a.m. Interim President Claire Fagin, Interim Provost Marvin Lazerson, the deans of the University's four undergraduate schools and members of SCUE will be among the 60-person audience, the bulk of which will be students from the four schools. Students wishing to be a part of the audience are encouraged to sign up in the President's Office, Town Meeting Producer Leah Binder said last night. During the Town Meeting, a short video, produced by UTV and Annenberg students, will be shown profiling four undergraduate students. The students were filmed going about their daily activities. Fagin said last night she believes the issue of undergraduate education is extremely important, adding that the Town Meeting will provide the undergraduate deans with a chance to address the issue and respond directly to student concerns. Fagin also said she is thrilled Jamieson will be moderating the discussion. "Kathleen [Jamieson] is fantastic," she said. "We couldn't do better than Kathleen. She's been quoted everywhere and she's very, very good on television." It was originally hoped that Andrea Mitchell, NBC News' White House correspondent and a member of the University Board of Trustees, would moderate the discussion, but Mitchell canceled her appearance after she was called away to cover developments in Bosnia. "Andrea really wanted to do this," Fagin said. Binder said there is "virtually no chance" that Mitchell will still be able to attend. The Town Meeting will be rebroadcast several times by UTV. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Matthew Santirocco will be holding a discussion about the Town Meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the Quadrangle's McClelland Lounge.
