Her speech is part of the Annenberg School for Communication's "Women and Politics" lecture series, Annenberg Dean Kathleen Hall Jamieson said last night. The lecture series brought former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to the University last year, Jamieson said. In an advertisement in The Daily Pennsylvanian, the "Women and Politics" lecture series is described as an exploration of "issues facing women in positions of political authority." Jamieson said she invited Mikulski, a Democrat, to speak at the University because she admires her "unique communication style." She added that although the lecture will be held at Meyerson in preparation of a large turnout, one of the aims of today's lecture is to discover "the extent of the campus interest" in the issue of women and politics. Last year, 800 people gathered in the University Museum to hear Thatcher speak, Jamieson said. Jamieson said she expects both men and women "interested in political communication and women's issues" to attend tonight's lecture, which begins at 6 p.m. -- Jorie Green
