EDITORIAL: Derby Dilemma

Panhel takes a strong stand andPanhel takes a strong stand andnow Sigma Chi can do the samePanhel takes a strong stand andnow Sigma Chi can do the same________________________________ This means none of the nine member sororities will be allowed to officially compete during Sigma Chi's annual philanthropic event. However, individual sorority members who wish to participate will still be allowed to do so, but not as representatives of their sororities. On the one hand, the event has been plagued by accusations of sexism for years, both at the University and across the country. Rumors of attempted sexual assaults and drunken revelry have circulated for quite some time. On the other hand, Derby Days has raised over $35,000 for childrens in the last four years with events such as cheesesteak eating competitions. It provides an invaluable service to the Children's Crisis Treatment Center of Philadelphia. We will not pass judgement on whether or not Derby Days is, indeed, a sexist event. Its fundraising merits are obvious to all, but we do applaud Panhel for taking a determined stand on a subject it clearly feels very strongly about. At the same time, we commend them for not imposing their views on all their members. If individuals want to participate, they should have every right to do so. As for Sigma Chi, while we praise their efforts for children nationwide, we urge them to take this opportunity to dispel the nasty rumors that surround them. In the Buff
