Approximately 50 people at - tended the Spring Fling Commit - tee's second meeting, falling short of 75 volunteers Spring Fling direc - tors said they will need in order to make this year's three-day party a success. Spring Fling co-directors Jeff & Anapolsky, Matt Jacobson and & Leila Graham-Willis decided to & hold last night's meeting after only 20 students came to the first one held last month. Wharton junior Anapolksy said & that he was "very pleased" with the number of people present, and cre - dited the increased publicity ar - ound campus for the larger turnout at the second meeting. "We put flyers around the Quad, in the High Rises, and in the Whar - ton mailfolders," Anapolsky said. & "We also put a banner on Locust Walk, and made direct phone calls." "I feel that the turnout repre - sented a diverse group of people -- a cross section of the student body -- and that's important to us," Ana - polsky added. Jacobson, a College senior, & opened the meeting by giving a & brief history of the annual event. He stated that this will be the 21st year Spring Fling is held at the Uni - versity, and that it is the oldest, largest, student-run carnival in the Northeast. Last year, there were three carni - val rides in Superblock, a laser light show, and a Blues Travelers con - cert. Two years ago the Indigo Girls were featured. Applications were handed out for positions on 11 different commit - tees such as daytime entertain - ment, security, publicity and & souvenirs. A new committee, Minority Con - cerns, has been created this year in an attempt to increase the minority community's participation in & Spring Fling, Graham-Willis said. "We're trying to broaden the & events and activities at Penn so & that everyone can enjoy Spring & Fling," Graham-Willis said. The directors encouraged those who attended the meeting to apply for a committee and to get involved. "This is a good opportunity to & take a leadership role at the Univer - sity and you get to meet a lot of different people," Anapolsky said. Applications are available at the Office of Student Life in Houston Hall and are due by today. Informal interviews will be held & next week.
