Last fall, Facilitating Learning About Sexual Health and Student Health took part in some fairly high-profile events, including passing out free condoms on Locust Walk in recognition of World AIDS day, and speaking at High Rise North's version of television's "Studs." Yet, more can still be done. This is also why a special AIDS Awareness Week is necessary. Unfortunately, the attention of the University community can wander if people become over-accustomed to the day-to-day events. Kudos to Student Health, FLASH and sexual health educator Kate Webster for deciding to provide both this year. Now it is up to the University community to attend AIDS Awareness Week events and make sure organizers' efforts aren't falling on apathetic ears. Moreover, it is up to the community to learn how to avoid contracting HIV. AIDS Awareness Week is the perfect time to do so. In the future, we may be able to conceive of a day without HIV or AIDS. In the meantime, not a day should go by when students are not aware of the destructive potential of the virus. And for one week each year, it warrants extra-special attention.
