Parker was disheartened by the cancellation of the Ivy League season this year, but the silver lining is that she will be able to continue her basketball career at the University of Virginia.

The Daily Pennsylvanian asked Maddie McGregor of Penn volleyball 15 questions about her sport, her time at Penn, and her life overall. Here's what the sophomore had to say.  

Orie’s path to competing at Penn was atypical. The Buffalo, N.Y. native grew up as a multi-sport athlete, sampling nearly every sport that she could. Even when it came time to specialize in sports early in high school, running hadn’t crossed Orie’s mind yet.

Prior to the Ivy League's announcement granting senior student-athletes graduate eligibility, many Penn athletes solidified transfer plans, in hopes of finishing their careers in action rather than on a practice field. Nick Christoffersen of Penn men's soccer spent his winter break in a different country. The Toronto, ON native spent the three months from December to February in Denmark, training with the Danish 1st Division soccer club, HB Køge.

Growing up in Croatia, Curnic found a love for tennis at the age of five. Despite the strong competition, she performed well in all of her tournaments and started to take tennis more seriously when she was 11, playing for the Croatian national team. Eventually, she found herself on a much larger stage, competing in tournaments across Europe at the age of 15. 

Although Vogel was not able to finish her collegiate career on the field with the Quakers, she has still been able to make her mark on the team even during the virtual season. Vogel was named co-captain this past fall, and has worked to keep the team connected and motivated despite the lost season.

Title IX, a federal civil rights law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, was enacted June 23, 1972 and its interpretation was published in June, 1974. It was designed to prevent discrimination based on sex in educational programs or activities, including athletics.

For some, the new exception changes little, especially for those who didn't have any plans to go to graduate school or play another season. However, for others, it was a decision that came at an inconvenient time and impacted plans for next year. 

Built in 1927, the Palestra acquired its name from Greek professor William N. Bates after the ancient Greek term “palæstra,” a rectangular enclosure connected to a gymnasium in which athletes would compete in front of an audience. 

The Penn men's soccer team decided to take action and create a diversity and inclusion committee to promote social justice awareness and make a difference on the field, on Penn’s campus, and in the West Philadelphia community.

In the wake of the protests and racial activism of last summer, Penn women's soccer, along with the other seven Ivy League teams, formed the Justice Coalition to further their commitment to advancing social justice issues in their communities. 

In February 2021, Penn announced that current freshmen must enroll in a dining plan during their sophomore year, sparking confusion and backlash from students. For athletes, who often follow strict nutritional guidelines as part of their training, this new policy spurred conflicting opinions. 

Lauren Charlton is certainly no stranger to basketball. The Penn freshman guard has been playing since the age of five alongside her competitive family, and now she’s bringing her skills to the Quakers.
