2006 College graduate Joe Maiellano has worked with his wife and their two business partners since October of last year on The Homemade Gin Kit, which allows buyers to transform a bottle of store-bought vodka into a homemade bottle of gin.

A recent study by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine found that restricting sleep led to weight gains because of increased late night calorie consumption. The subjects’ environment resembled that of a college freshman.

The University’s funding from the state of Pennsylvania will increase slightly for fiscal year 2014, which includes the coming school year. The School of Veterinary Medicine and the Center for Infectious Disease will receive the majority of the funds.

Last Thursday on the Fourth of July, while shooting the photographs presented in this issue, I was caught in a stampede that broke out on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. I left behind my equipment bag that contained not only valuable camera lenses but also many of my personal belongings. So last Sunday, when two police officers knocked on my door with the camera bag in hand, I was beyond thankful.

As any student or prospective student would, these people have asked me for some guidance. Once I exhaust the generic advice — whose class not to take, what dining halls are best, where to go during NSO — the best wisdom I can really give to these young hopefuls is to do your freshman year Leslie Knope style.

A part-time internship at the PSPCA (Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and conducting research for my Latin American and Latino Studies thesis aren’t exactly wastes of time. But I want my summers to be more than just another line of ink on high-gloss resume paper.
