Kickoff 2006

By Stan and Parisa Bastani · Sept. 15, 2006

In their last meeting, the Penn football team defeated Lafayette soundly by a 30-point margin. That year, the Quakers went on to an undefeated Ivy League record to win the conference title.

You don't need a player bio, a media guide or an interview with Coach Darren Ambrose to see that Natalie Capuano is a standout. You simply need to head over to Rhodes Field and watch a game. It is obvious, even to those completely unfamiliar with the Penn women's soccer squad.

Several weeks ago, it looked as if Penn's season-opening football contest against Lafayette could face a slight problem - the lack of a suitable stadium. Lafayette had undertaken an extensive, two-part renovation of Fisher Field - with a $23 million price tag - that would make even the highest-profile coaches smile.

The Philadelphia basketball conference, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last season, isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Penn, La Salle, Temple, Saint Joseph's and Villanova have all agreed to continue participating in the round-robin format for men and women's basketball through the 2009-10 season.

Volleyball in search of first win

Although the Penn volleyball team lost all three games at the Comfort Suites Invitational last weekend, it didn't come away empty-handed. After returning from Charlotte, N.C., the Quakers now have a better idea of what they need to do to succeed.

There are 10,422 undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania. 51 percent of those undergraduates are female and 49 percent are male. Based on those numbers, one would expect that the ratio of male-to-female athletes would be nearly 1:1 as well. If you are looking for a poll concerning football, you might go to ESPN, USA Today or The Associated Press. But here's one name you probably wouldn't think of: Wharton. But Penn's business school has suddenly gotten into the business of football rankings, publishing a study over the summer.

Five Questions: On defense and special teams

The Quakers' 2006 defense couldn't be any more different from the 2005 defense - not in terms of the 11 men on the field, but in terms of the expectations at each position. Last year, a young, inexperienced front seven joined a secondary stacked with seniors, but that didn't seem to matter much.

Though the offensive coaching staff for the Penn football team features a completely new look this year, don't expect the style of play to be much different from last year. Head coach Al Bagnoli does not intend to implement many different strategies in the team's offensive scheme this year, despite several important coaching changes that occurred in the off-season.

The Penn women's basketball team has revealed its schedule for its upcoming season, and the slate features faces both old and new. Loyola (Md.) and Xavier both make their first-ever appearances on the schedule, although neither will make the trip to the Palestra.

Lafayette a team desperate for first win of season

The Penn field hockey team knows exactly how Lafayette feels. Entering their fourth game of the season, the Leopards find themselves in the same position as the Quakers (1-3, 1-0 Ivy) were less than a week ago - with an 0-3 record. But just as Penn notched its first win of the season in its fourth game, coach Val Cloud isn't taking anything for granted tonight when the two teams face off in Easton, Pa.

If Ivy League executive director Jeff Orleans is your 75-year-old grandmother, Penn football coach Al Bagnoli is a 16-year-old girl. That's right, coach, a 16-year-old girl. And it's not just because of the tanning. As reported in last Friday's Daily Pennsylvanian, the two stand on opposite sides of the text messaging debate when it comes to recruiting.

For at least the second consecutive year, Penn has been the last Ivy League school to officially publish its men's basketball schedule. But thanks to the more punctual schedule-releases of the schools that we will be playing, we already know when most of Penn's games will take place, so it's not too early to take a look at the schedule.
