We’ve all heard the saying work hard, play hard, and Penn women’s soccer did just that over the weekend. The team spent its weekend bonding as a unit on the road, taking on VCU on Friday and Delaware on Sunday along the way.

After three tough losses against top-tier opponents, Penn came into Sunday afternoon’s matchup with Temple on a downswing,  but 90 minutes later the Quakers were back in their groove.

There are several aspects of Penn football currently in transition. Despite that, those players showed flashes of brilliance on Saturday, and allow Red and Blue fans to reminisce over the 2012 championship team.

Penn volleyball came into the final day of the Big 5 Tournament - and non-conference play - with a six-game losing streak hanging over its head. Coach Kerry Carr's squad got that monkey off its back, but Penn was unable to pull off a sweep.

Despite an impressive showing on defense from Penn as well as a vigorous pace of play from the very outset of the match, Cornell tragically bested the visiting Quakers 1-0.

The Quakers (2-1-2) ended with a scoreless draw against the Rams in a battle of the defenses. VCU, coming in the match with a two-game winning streak, entered the match with guns blazing, out shooting Penn, 11-4.

However, Villanova was too much to handle on Friday evening, as the Wildcats dispatched the hosting Quakers in straight sets to hand Penn its sixth straight loss after a 2-0 start to the season.

A goal in the 88th minute by sophomore Jake Garcia pushed No. 12 American past the Red and Blue, 2-1, in a close match on Rhodes Field.

If Penn women's soccer coach Darren Ambrose had a crystal ball three weeks ago and could have seen the Quaker’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against Virginia Commonwealth, he would hardly recognize his own team.

Before Penn women’s soccer opens conference play under the bright lights of Rhodes Field next weekend, they have two away games to iron out the kinks.

When the Red and Blue (2-2) takes the field on Thursday night to face off against visiting No. 12 American, it will be the team’s third straight game against top-tier competition.
