Fall 2013 Undergraduate Assembly Elections

	Franklin Field and Penn football were the center of controversy during former President Harold Stassen’s tenure. Stassen attempted to go against the NCAA in 1951 by signing a television contract to broadcast Penn’s eight home games.

It isn’t common for the Ancient Eight to be involved in disagreements with the NCAA. Yet former Penn President Harold Stassen led the University into a fight with the NCAA that nearly resulted in Penn’s expulsion from the organization.

Haven’t we yet reached a point where people are chosen for their own qualifications and abilities? I believe it is demeaning for a great university such as Penn to be counting people by gender or by skin color or ethnic background.

This isn’t about “discriminating” against straight white cisgender men. This isn’t even about giving preference to minorities. It’s about giving a fair shot to people who have historically had fewer opportunities due to institutionalized biases.

The passion of the Civil Rights Era continues today in student leaders on campus. However, the activism comes in a different format. The student leaders of various minority groups on campus emphasized that activism for them very much revolves around dialogue within their respective communities and with the University’s administration.
