With admissions serving as a system “undermined by a 'hereditary aristocracy of wealth,'” and elite schools’ campus cultures reaffirming status through social hierarchies, modern students are navigating a system where status matters more than skill.

Is it who you hang out with? Is it how you dress, or where you went to school? Is it where you’re from or how you talk? Is it your name? Is it what you eat or where you worship? Who gets to make that decision? Who is in charge of validating a person’s “Black card”?

I grew up in a country torn by guerrillas. I remember 2016 when the peace agreement referendum was up for election. 50.2% of the Colombian people voted against it. They were accused of rejecting peace and of holding grudges. I see it differently: Those who voted no refused to accept a system that would let murderers, rapists, drug dealers, and other terrorists — who had purposefully harmed the country for 50-plus years — get away unscathed.
