After announcing a resolution agreement with the Department of Education to settle an investigation into Title IX violations yesterday, Penn has begun complying with the federal government’s requirements.
The University has removed 2022 College graduate and former Penn swimmer Lia Thomas’ individual records, issued a public statement specifying that Penn Athletics “will adopt biology-based definitions for the words ‘male’ and ‘female’ pursuant to Title IX and consistent with President Trump’s Executive Orders,” and privately apologized to affected athletes.
White House Senior Policy Strategist May Mailman told The Daily Pennsylvanian on July 1 that Penn initially approached the federal government to begin negotiations “several months” ago. The federal government, she added, will ensure that the University upholds their end of the agreement.
Following the agreement, the White House released $175 million in previously frozen federal funding to Penn on Wednesday. The decision to cut funding in March was made because Penn “infamously permitted a male to compete on its women’s swimming team,” according to a senior White House official at the time.
