Colleges are using big data to improve graduation rates and save students money.
Following studies that report a correlation between active campus lives and higher graduation rates, Ball State University has been keeping track of students' activities by tracking which events they swipe into and have specialists focused on retention reach out to students whose activity has been lacking.
Some big data is being used to keep track of specific student groups, such as low-income students. In an effort to save these students money by eliminating time and money spent exploring majors, Georgia State has used the data to develop a "major matcher" system that matches students with potential majors based on the classes they have taken.
