Pope Francis cements plans to visit Philly next September

The leader of the Catholic church is on his way to Philly next year.

On Monday, Pope Francis confirmed that he will be attending the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September 2015. "The three-day visit will include a public Sunday mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway on Sept. 27, 2015. Officials estimate up to 2 million people could come to see the pope," stated NBC Philadelphia.

It will be the pontiff's first visit to the United States since he was elected to lead the church in 2013.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called the news "the largest event in the city's modern history" during a statement at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
