Why do girls outperform boys in academics?

Studies have shown that girls do better than boys when it comes to academics. But do school systems actually favor females? 

A Sept. 18 article in The Atlanic concluded that “girls succeed over boys in school because they are more apt to plan ahead, set academic goals, and put effort into achieving those goals." Author and clinical psychologist Enrico Gnaulati cites research by Penn professors Martin Seligman and Angela Duckworth to support his conlusion. Seligman and Duckworth found that middle school-aged girls are more prone to start their homework earlier in the day and spend double the amount of time working on homework. 

Boys do take the lead in some cases, though. Researchers from Allegheny College found, for instance, that "the stress many girls experience in test situations can artificially lower their performance."
