Philadelphia is home to a lot of colleges, but it does not have the feel of a college town.
There are more than a dozen schools located within a short walk or SEPTA ride of Penn’s campus. But other than an occasional basketball matchup, students of these colleges rarely meet in organized social settings.
Penn students should take advantage of the proximity to their peers at other schools to foster stronger relationships in the city.
It’s important for Penn students to be a part of a community that stretches beyond the boundaries of the University’s campus. This integration not only provides a more fun experience but also introduces more perspectives and creates a more vibrant atmosphere.
Saturday’s “Battle of the Bands” — which was hosted by Penn and Drexel University’s Relay for Life committees and featured musicians from both schools — is an example of an event that benefited from the joint effort. A Penn-Drexel battle of the bands provides a more diverse talent pool than that of any one school.
We encourage the students of Philadelphia’s colleges and universities to be open to greater collaboration and to help transform Philadelphia into a true college town.
