Exactly one week after assistant coach John Gallagher left Penn for Boston College, and two weeks after Jerome Allen was announced as the basketball program’s head coach, Hartford coach Dan Leibovitz said he plans to join Allen as the program’s top assistant.

ESPN’s Andy Katz reported last night that Leibovitz had resigned from his position at Hartford, opting out of a contract that lasted until 2014. Leibovitz is expecting to return to Penn.

“[Leibovitz] has recruited good student-athletes who have brought integrity to our program,” said Patricia H. Meiser, director of athletics at Hartford in a statement. “We certainly wish him well in his future endeavours.”

At Hartford, Leibovitz racked up a 44-82 record and led the Hawks to an America East conference title in 2007-08.

In four years, Leibovitz roped in recruits from across the nation: four from Penn., five from Calif., three from Texas, as well as others from Ala., Wash., D.C., Va., and Ga.

As part of the Penn team, he’ll have to fill a recruiting void left by Gallagher.

Leibovitz played basketball for one year at Franklin and Marshall before transferring to Penn in 1993. He graduated in 1996 — one year after Allen — and according to Katz, the two were good friends, even though Leibovitz did not play varsity basketball for the Quakers.

He did play with Allen in high school at Episcopal Academy, under coach Dan Dougherty.

He worked as an assistant at Temple in 1996, where he stayed for 10 years. Leibovitz took the helm of the Hartford program in 2006.
