UA elections turnout just below 50%

At the close of the 2010 Undergraduate Assembly elections season on Friday afternoon, the Nominations and Elections Committee reported an overall voter turnout rate of 49.03 percent — or 3,560 voters.

Wharton senior and NEC Vice Chairwoman for Elections Patricia Liu said she is “highly pleased” with these figures, given the number of uncontested races. She had initially set a goal of 55-percent voter turnout.

Last year's the voter turnout rate was 49.8 percent.

Liu attributed the showing to the publicized presidential and vice presidential campaigns. Also, she said, candidates’ “substantive campaigns running on realistic promises” probably encouraged students to vote based on actual issues.

Though she was disappointed in some of the candidates’ “poor sportsmanship” this year, Liu added, it was “impressive to see so many students make an effort and vote.”

According to Liu, elections results will be announced on Sunday afternoon, following an NEC hearing about violations of election rules.
