College junior Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim, 22, was released after posting bail Tuesday night after being arrested for theft that morning.
The bail was set at $1000, and an arraignment has been scheduled for February 4 at 10 a.m., according to court documents.
“You have a nice young man who’s a good student and a good kid,” Shepherd-Oppenheim’s attorney William Brennan told the Philadelphia Daily News. “If his name was Joe Blow, nobody would be writing about it.”
Brennan added that he intends to “vigorously defend him.”
Shepherd-Oppenheim, son of actress Cybill Shepherd, allegedly stole items such as money, a digital camera, paperwork and “travel folders” while passengers slept on an overnight United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia.
The items were later found in the plane’s restroom, and Shepherd-Oppenheim was arrested upon landing.
Ron Ozio, Director of Media Relations for the University, confirmed that Shepherd-Oppenheim is enrolled at Penn, but was unable to provide further details of his status as a student for “privacy reasons.”
