Every new semester brings new changes to the University. This semester is no different. Wednesday, a newly renovated Music Building opens after 18 months of construction. And the results hit a high note.
The new Music Building is a large upgrade from the old one, which had not experienced major renovations since it was first built as an orphanage in 1890. The remodeled building is more uniquely designed for the discipline it houses, with acoustically isolated classrooms, offices and practice rooms. Additionally, the layout has more open spaces to foster greater interaction between students and faculty.
In Penn’s year of “Arts and the City,” it is especially appropriate that the school is now reopening a building dedicated to music. When people think of Penn, its artistically inclined academic departments may not immediately come to mind, but they are nonetheless a valuable part of the University’s intellectual offerings that deserve appreciation.
