W. Hoops goes to White Invitational

The Penn women’s basketball team won’t have much time to digest their Thanksgiving dinner, as the squad is scheduled to play in Chicago on Black Friday.

The Quakers (0-2, 0-0 Ivy) will face Iowa State and Northwestern at the 19th annual Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational.

Against Drake, ISU freshman Anna Prins towered over the competition in more ways than one. The 6-foot-7 center netted nine points and led the team with two blocks. For her efforts, Prins received Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week honors.

The Cyclones (3-1) are stacked on offense, as they boast four players averaging more than 10 points per game. In order for the Red and Blue to contend, the defense — which has allowed its opponents an average of 55.0 points per game — will have to step up.

The Quakers have matched their opponents in defensive rebounds, as they both have amassed and allowed 73. Jess Knapp and Kim Adams — who lead the Quakers in defensive rebounds with 13 apiece — will have to lead the rebounding surge in order to stop the Cyclones’ powerful offense from getting second chances.

Penn will also face undefeated host Northwestern (4-0). The Wildcats’ Amy Jaeschke leads the squad in scoring, as she averages 20.3 points per game, compared to Penn’s leader Jerin Smith who averages 10.7 points per game.

Offensively, the Quakers should look to better their shot selection. Penn’s three-point field goal percentage is at .194, which puts it in the basement of the Ivy League.
