Police break up crowds at 40th street Saturday

Large riot-like crowds of teenagers disrupted the western end of Penn's campus Saturday night, bringing Penn and Philadelphia Police to 40th Street to gain control of the situation.

No injuries were reported, according to Division of Public Safety spokeswoman Stef Cella.

The situation came less than 24 hours after shots were fired outside Philly Diner, located at 3901 Walnut St. No one was injured in the shooting, and no Penn students were involved.

The juveniles were in the area for an event at Strikes Bowling Lounge, located at 4040 Locust St. At about 11 p.m., Strikes management prematurely shut down the event after several fights broke out inside the bowling alley.

After the event was shut down, about 500 teens who had attended gathered around 40th and Walnut streets.

Several more fights occurred in the area at that point. Penn Police, Philadelphia Police and AlliedBarton security guards arrived on the scene to disperse the crowds.

Cella wrote that Penn and Philadelphia Police will meet with Strikes management today to review future event bookings and discuss how to make sure similar situations do not arise in the future.
