Jose Garces, the chef behind downtown tapas restaurants Amada and Tinto, has announced that his latest restaurant, Distrito, will open in July in the University City Hub, located at 3945 Chestnut St.
Distrito, originally intended to be named Chilango, will have a green-and-pink Mexico City theme. Its planned décor includes a booth built from a Volkswagon Beetle - a typical taxicab in the Mexican capital.
The menu will have Garces' modern interpretations of traditional Mexican fare, including Guindilla Chili-Marinated Lamb Chops and Scallops al Pastor. The drinks menu will feature over 60 types of tequila and a rotating menu of freshly-designed margaritas.
"I love the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine, and Distrito offers me a great opportunity to share them," Garces said in a press release. "It's a thrilling way for me to continue my evolution as a chef and restaurateur.
Another local restaurateur, Stephen Starr, plans to open a Mexican restaurant near campus, though plans for Starr's dining spot have yet to be released.
