Think you know which musicians should come to Penn? Speak up.
The Social Planning and Events Committee released its fourth annual Student Body Survey today in an attempt to gather opinions and recommendations for future mainstream events, like the Spring Fling headliner concert.
"The goal is to allow students to participate in the decision-making process," SPEC President and College senior Max Cancre said. "It's not like they can elect their Spring Fling artist, so it would be great if SPEC directors could be well informed of what students want."
SPEC has come under criticism in recent years for choosing artists who all play alternative rock like Ben Kweller, Ben Folds and OAR.
To that end, SPEC is "hoping to provide an avenue for the kind of criticism," Cancre said.
As one of the six student-government branches, SPEC decides each year which performers, speakers and movie screenings to bring in based on various means of student input.
"We are part of student government, so we need to be representative of student interests," Cancre said.
Questions in the survey range from "Who would you like to see at the Fling concert?" to "What night of the week is best to have free movie screenings?"
SPEC Treasurer and College senior Tony Rizzo called the survey the "best way to communicate with the student-body interest."
And there's an even greater incentive to participate.
Students who have completed the survey by the end of the fall semester will be entered into a lottery, from which three winners will be selected to receive a free ticket to every event that SPEC puts on in the Spring - a total of 25.
The survey, done through SurveyMonkey.com, is accessible via SPEC's Web site (www.specevents.net).
