Biemer emerges to claim a victory down south for W. Hoops

Junior forward adds half of the points in Elon win, but Penn can't avoid W&M; rout

How's this to cap off a career day?

Carrie Biemer hit a turnaround jumper at the last seconds of the Quakers' game against Elon Friday, securing a 56-54 victory.

Biemer put up a career-high 28 points in the game and was named most valuable player of the contest.

Following that performance, however, William & Mary blew out the Quakers, 87-64, ending Penn's road trip to the Elon Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.

In the first game against Elon (0-2), the Quakers (1-1) started off fast, mounting a 33-21 lead going into the half off of a 21-4 run.

The Red and Blue could not hold on, though, as the Phoenix charged hard in the second half, tying the game with 17 seconds remaining. With Biemer's late-game heroics, however, the Red and Blue started off the season with a win for the fourth straight time under head coach Pat Knapp.

Against William and Mary (2-0), the Quakers found themselves outmatched. The Tribe ran up the score early, at one point leading Penn 33-11.

At halftime, the Quakers were still down by 15 points, 47-32. The deficit proved too much to overcome, and William and Mary spoiled another solid game for Biemer, who led the team with 18 points.

Freshman Kim Adams and junior Katarina Lackner also added double digits, with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Three-point defense and early foul trouble did the Red and Blue in. Penn allowed the Tribe to shoot 54.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Quakers only shot 21.4 percent on their threes.

The Red and Blue will come back to Philadelphia for their next four games. Penn leads off its long homestand against Manhattan this Saturday.
