News Brief: Police catch former Penn ABP employee

Keith Devine, a former Huntsman Hall Au Bon Pain employee who was wanted in connection with a March 25 murder, has been apprehended.

Devine, 26, was arrested by the Philadelphia Police on August 16.

He faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy to engage in murder and other offenses related to the March shooting death of Jovonne Stelly on the 5800 block of Pentridge Street.

A preliminary hearing, in which a judge will determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial, has been set for Dec. 4. Devine is currently in custody at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Northeast Philadelphia.

Another former Au Bon Pain employee was also arrested in April in connection with Stelly's death. Samuel Scruggs, 46, is facing third-degree murder charges.

Devine and Scruggs were both fired from Au Bon Pain for failing to show up for work after the shooting.

Devine had an extended violent criminal history, including attempted murder and aggravated assault convictions prior to his employment at Au Bon Pain.

Following the murder, Penn's Business Services said that the Au Bon Pain would perform background checks on all of its employees.

Business Services is also reviewing its hiring practices and background checks for all of its vendors, part of a campuswide hiring practices review for faculty, staff and students.
