Sports Brief: Vaughn back to head both golf teams

When former men's golf coach Rob Powelson resigned earlier this summer, the decision about who would fill the vacancy was simple, according to Penn director of golf Francis Vaughn.

Already the women's coach, Vaughn himself would take over the head coaching duties of the men's program as well.

Vaughn said the arrangement was reached after athletics administrators spoke about "how to move forward with the limited time we had."

The first meet of the golf season for both teams is Sept 21-23.

It won't be the first time Vaughn led both programs. Originally hired as a men's golf coach when the program began in 1996, Vaughn coached the women's team as well from its inception in 2000 until 2002.

Vaughn lead the men to an Ivy Championship in 1998 and second place finishes in 1997, 2000 and 2001.

Since 2002 he has moved to just coaching the women, though, as the director of golf he still helped with the office operations of the men's squad.

Vaughn does have some help coming in though. Chad Perman, a former volunteer, was announced as a permanent assistant at the same time as Vaughn's appointment.

"He's going to be here pretty much everyday, it's a full-time position," Vaughn said. "I think it's going to be very beneficial. He'll put more of an emphasis on the men's program, but will help the women when needed."

Vaughn also noted that Powelson began his coaching stint at Penn as an assistant before he assumed the head job of the men's program.
