Gunshot reported near campus

No victim was found; incident no longer under investigation

A gunshot was reported on the unit block of South 40th Street the night of Aug. 15.

Philadelphia Police received a 911 call from a person claiming that a gun had gone off during an attempted robbery near campus, according to Penn Division of Public Safety spokeswoman Karima Zedan.

Both Philadelphia and Penn police responded to the call.

SEPTA police were also on the scene because they were directing traffic during an extended shutdown of the Market-Frankford El west of the subway station at 40th and Market streets.

The area, between Market and Ludlow streets, was cordoned off until around 11 p.m.

A detective at the scene said that a spent shell casing and some blood were found.

No victim has come forward, nor has the victim been found after a search of area hospitals. As such, and because none of the evidence proves an actual crime occurred, the incident is not under further investigation.

Southwest Detectives could not provide the time when the 911 call was placed, and the detective on the scene also did not know.

The incident happened amid a spate of eight shootings, two of them fatal, that occurred across the city that day.
