The construction of the Rosenthal Imaging and Treatment Center was completed last Thursday at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital located on 39th and Spruce streets.
The new facility is expected to open sometime later this summer.
RITC is the only oncology and imaging facility devoted entirely to veterinary medicine in Pennsylvania according to a press release by the Veterinary Hospital.
The goal of the new center is to "deliver a smooth, positive experience" for animal patients over their entire stay in the hospital, states the Web site.
The press release stated that new equipment in the facility includes an "MRI, CT, linear accelerator, two examination rooms, a fully equipped anesthesia prep room, a patient recovery suite and a conference room."
The new technology shouldhelp to detail more precise locations of tumors and provide better imaging of internal structures.
According to the hospital's Web site, RITC's "array of diagnostic equipment rivals that of the most sophisticated human hospitals."
The hospital receives over 28,000 small animal patient visits per year and over 50 percent of those cases are referrals from hospitals located around the country. Small animal types include various mammals, reptiles, birds and fish.
