amed Penn's new associate vice president for research and executive director of the University's Center for Technology Transfer.
In this role, he will be responsible for reorganizing and guiding Penn's moves to turn research into business opportunities - and thus possible sources of income.
He will also be responsible for forging partnerships between industry and Penn research initiatives.
Cleare comes from Columbia University, where he has headed its commercialization office for the past seven years.
Columbia has long been recognized as the leader in research commercialization and is currently bringing in the most revenue from patents and research of any U.S. higher-education institution.
"Mike is very well regarded by peers, has a stellar track record and will bring to the position his expert ability to form meaningful collaborations between seemingly disparate constituencies.
"We consider ourselves fortunate to be in a position to call upon his expertise," said Steven Fluharty, vice provost for research, in a statement.
Cleare is set to begin his tenure at Penn Aug. 1.
