Villanova great Porter dies after beating

Howard Porter, one of the greatest players in Villanova basketball history, died Saturday. He was 58.

He was found brutally beaten in an alleyway in Minneapolis 10 days ago, and was then hospitalized until he died. The medical examiner listed the cause of death as "multiple blunt force trauma."

Officials are still searching for the attacker.

There has been an outpouring of shock and grief from the basketball community.

"Howard provided so many Villanovans with thrills on the basketball court,'' Villanova coach Jay Wright said in a statement released by the school. "Since his playing days ended, he has been an outstanding role model for our current players and coaching staff.''

Former Villanova guard and current NBA player Randy Foye told the Associated Press that Porter was like a mentor to him.

The highlight of Porter's college career was undoubtedly the team's run to the NCAA Championship in 1971, where they lost to UCLA. Porter was honored by being named the tournament's outstanding player.

Porter was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1971, but his career did not fulfill the promise of his college days, and Porter also fell into drugs.

The Star-Tribune reported that by 1985, Porter was addicting to cocaine, broke, and living in his mother's house.

He recovered from his addiction and in 1995 began a career as a parole officer.

"I took a ride with the devil,'' Porter told the Star Tribune in a 2001 interview. "But I always knew, deep down inside, I felt God wasn't through with me yet.''
