Matt Valenti was once again crowned champion at 133 pounds last night at the NCAA Championships held at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Valenti defeated Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State, 4-2, to take home his second title in four tournament appearances.
The first points of the match went to Scott, as he rode Valenti for a takedown in the middle of the first.
"It was a little frustrating, that I got taken down on something that I had practiced all day," Valenti said.
But the two-time champ countered back right off the insuing whistle. He scored two points on a reversal and then in the second banked enough riding time to add an extra point at the end of the match.
The third peroid was mostly spent in the neutral position, and Valenti wrestled conservative with the match going in his favor. Scott made a last minute effort to takedown Valenti, but was unsuccessful.
Valenti becomes just the second wrestler in Penn history to repeat as a National Champion; Dick Batista, Penn's other two-time champ, won back in 1941 and 1942.
"I 've very pround to represent our program and and very proud to represent our school out here," Valenti said. "To be considered with some of the greats in wrestling history is an honor."
