Track drops meets to Connecticut, Navy

Despite seven first-place efforts from the women's track team and three from the men, both squads finished second of four teams last weekend.

Tim Kaijala finished first in the one-mile run with a time of 4:09.79. Kyle Calvo crossed the line first in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.9 seconds and sophmore Anthony Abitante cleared height in the pole vault.

The men's team, which fell to Navy at the Navy Invitational, had over 10 other events with top-five finishes. Many athletes earned points for the Quakers, proving to coach Charlie Powell that depth will not be a problem this year.

For the women, who finished behind Connecticut at the Army Invite, the distance team was impressive, taking first in the 500-, 1,000- and 3,000-meters. Jesse Carlin finished first in the 500-meter run. Freshman Liza Lozovatskaya jumped 3.35 meters in the pole vault, the best jump of the day.

Additionally, the 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams both won.

Women's coach Gwen Harris was satisfied with her team's performance, but added that there is room for improvement.

"I think it was an okay meet, nothing great, but also nothing bad and I think the girls understand that as well," she said.

However, Harris cared more about individual performances than the overall score. She experimented with putting several runners in events that they do not run and was ultimately pleased with their performance.

"We did okay, we got some kinks out and I think we have some work to do so that we can move on from here and get started to do a really good job," she said.
