The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with University President Amy Gutmann about Scott Ward's time as a Wharton Marketing professor.
DP: Why was Ward allowed to remain on the faculty after two arrests?
AG: The most important fact is that Mr. Ward is no longer at Penn. He is not on our faculty, nor will he be on our faculty moving forward.
I can't second guess what was done in the past, but what I can say is that, here on in, Mr. Ward will not teach at Penn.
DP: Do you think that the fact that he was able to be here despite two arrests will change future protocols for examining faculty members?
AG: We've decided that he won't teach here and that he won't be on our faculty moving forward. I think that speaks for itself.
DP: Do other faculty members who take frequent visits to Thailand have a reason to be concerned that the University is going to be changing its procedure in how it monitors its faculty?
AG: I think we set a clear standard by what we did in this case, and it really speaks for itself.
I don't think its fair to speculate that there are other faculty members in this situation. As far as I know, this is a unique case.
