Fantasy football round-up

If you're like me, your annual fantasy draft is Christmas in July, but there are probably still some gifts out there to snag in free agency at the beginning of the season. The Joey Galloways and Willie Parkers of 2005 are still to be found.

? QBs: Depending on how many quarterbacks your league starts, Jon Kitna might not be available, but he could be in for a big season with the Lions. In 2003, before Palmer filled in for Cincinnati, Kitna threw for 3591 yards and 26 touchdowns, only 150 yards and 2 touchdowns fewer than Peyton Manning put up last year. And this season should be no different for Kitna, who will play under pass-happy former Rams coach now Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz. If Kitna isn't available, Brad Johnson, who threw for a total of 495 yards and four TDs in the final two games last year, is a nice backup.

? RBs: When looking for a backup running back, there may be no one worth getting left over, but nabbing a starter is key. If Denver's surprise starter, Mike Bell, is out there, he has value simply because of the Broncos' knack for rookie running careers. While the Jags' Fred Taylor is likely to be gone, his backup Greg Jones' ACL tear could give Taylor more work, especially a few more much needed goal line carries, making him a more attractive pickup.

? WRs: If you can afford to take a chance on a receiver with potential, a guy to grab is the Vikings' Troy Williamson. The 6-foot-1 wideout was the seventh overall pick in 2005, and thanks to the release of the troubled Koren Robinson, the speedy Williamson could be the main target, building on his 372 yards and 2 TDs from last year. Another player who looks to burst on the scene is Patriots receiver Reche Caldwell. He also could be thrust into the number one role if Deion Branch continues to hold out, and his QB in New England ain't that bad either.
