With a 2-1 victory over Penn on Saturday, Cornell's field hockey team jumped out to 4-0 for the first time in its history. But the perfect record was broken up by Vermont yesterday in a 2-0 Big Red loss.
Despite 11 shots, the Quakers were only able to convert once in Saturday's game. Junior Melissa Black scored on a penalty corner as time wound down in the first half. Black had three more shots during the game, as did sophomore Margaretha Ehret.
Jamie Calahan and Nicole Black each added two additional shots while Nyssa Liebermann got one more shot off.
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and held on. Senior Sarah Miller set up both goals for the Big Red as Abbi Horn and Helena Haas scored in the 16th and 31st minutes, respectively.
But the real story of the game was Cornell goalie Lizzie Goldblatt, who had six saves, playing all 70 minutes of the game.
Goldblatt made one save in the first half. In the second half, the Quakers played with determination, controlling the tempo and the ball, outshooting Cornell 8-3. However, Goldblatt made five second-half saves, including a stick save with less than 13 minutes to play in a one-on-one situation.
After the victory over Penn, Goldblatt has allowed two goals while saving 17 shots.
Despite just six shots, Cornell managed to score twice as Penn goalie Liz Schlossberg - Goldblatt's high-school teammate, coincidentally - made only one save in the game.
Penn is now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. The Quakers will travel to Penn State on Wednesday.
