Trustees conclude winter meetings

The University Board of Trustees convened Friday morning for the Stated Meeting of its annual winter conference.

Penn's top officials delivered reports on University issues such as academic policy, campus construction, budgeting, student life and security.

The six committees that met publicly the day before each gave a short presentation on the results of their meetings to the group and detailed the resolutions that were passed in these meetings.

Collectively, the resolutions called for expanded graduate-student privileges, adopted a new mortgage insurance program for faculty and authorized new construction projects such as the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

The meeting concluded with a memorial for late Trustee Michael Tarnopol, who died last summer.

University President Amy Gutmann, Provost Ron Daniels, Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli and Board Chairman James Riepe were present at the meeting, which served to provide an overview for the trustees of the conference.

The board is made up of 55 Penn alumni and prominent professionals and wields ultimate decision-making power over the University.

The board meets three times annually to discuss issues relevant to Penn and help shape the University's future. It is set to meet again over the summer.
